Day 11: Thurs. April 16, 2015 - Kodachrome State Park/Bryce Canyon

We woke up to clouds and even cooler weather this morning (below zero Celsius) with a forecast of snow!

We decided to make it a driving tour of Bryce Canyon day! (Bryce Canyon is only about 30 miles or half an hour away from our campground in Kodachrome State Park.)

Our first stop in Bryce Canyon was the Visitor Centre. We had to try the Junior Forest Ranger hat on Lucas! Too much cuteness!

We discovered that due to some unusually high winds the previous couple of days, most of the road in Bryce Canyon was closed. They were busy removing fallen trees from the road.

While waiting for the road to reopen, we went to see Bryce Point, which was accessible. It was still really windy, and very cold! It was - 5 C according to the Jeep's thermometer, but with the wind it felt much colder! It also started snowing while we were there unfortunately.

We all had our toques and down jackets on for this brief scenic stop.

Next, we decided to enjoy lunch in the Bryce Canyon Lodge. Rob and I both devoured a bowl of their tender and oh so flavourful Buffalo Stew. Lucas enjoyed the pieces we picked out for him too!

Then we avoided the snow a bit longer by hanging out in the Lodge foyer, while Rob used the free wifi to book some more campsites, and Lucas got to play on the sofa. He also got to meet another baby from Germany named Lewis!

After our time in the lodge, the road was open! We proceeded to do a driving tour of the main viewpoints in Bryce, taking turns hopping out of the car into the snow and wind while Lucas enjoyed his afternoon nap.

This is Black Birch Canyon:

This is Farview Point...but I find the name rather ironic on a snowy, cloudy day.

One more stop at the Visitors Centre to watch an informative film and hit the restrooms. The snow was starting to accumulate, as you can see on the lawn. Overall, Bryce was a bit of a disappointment. The weather certainly put a damper on things, as it was too cold to actually take Lucas on any real hikes. Our opinion may have been different on a sunnier, warmer day I'm sure.

The forecast for the evening back at our campsite and at a lower elevation was actually for snow as well. No evening hike tonight after dinner unfortunately. Instead, we sat around the dinner table and tried to teach Lucas how to play "pass the ball!"

Here are a couple of shots of the snowy beauty around our campsite just before sunset:

  1. Don't mean to be a donkey's bum , but Edmonton's weather is more on the plus side. Although you can't beat building a snowman and putting him on a cliff's edge. :-)

    1. I know, I know, it's warmer there! This is unseasonably cold according to everyone. But at least we are still brave enough to enjoy it - being Canadian is good practice!
