Day 13: Sat. April 18 - Escalante, UT

Today the warm and sunny weather returned, and helped to make today an epic one!  It was 20-25 degrees Celsius today.

We drove from our campsite in Escalante to the "Hole in the Rock" road just east of town. From there we continued about 42 km (26 miles) to the trailhead for today's hike, located within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Park.

This is just the beginning of our hike into some amazing canyons.

Cool purple cacti!

We were hiking in mostly sand today.

The first canyon we hiked in today was called Dry Fork Slot. It was a pleasant, fairly easy (flat) hike into a slot canyon that got narrower as we went further.

Narrower!
Family selfie!

Up next was Peekaboo slot canyon. For this extremely narrow top portion we had to go in one at a time without packs or Lucas.

It only took me about five minutes to squeeze my way through and pop out the other side, and circle back to Rob and Lucas. (Rob couldn't quite squeeze through this part of the canyon.)

Up next was a break for Lucas from the carrier. He's doing his best to look adorable as usual!

We got into some pretty tight spots in the much longer, lower portion of this very narrow canyon.

It was so beautiful and so challenging at the same time, which was pure fun for us.

We couldn't quite make it all the way to the bottom due to having Lucas along in his carrier, but we did squeeze through most of the Peekaboo Slot Canyon.

The essential trail markers (aka piles of rocks) guided us into and out of the canyons. This is the biggest one we saw. It seems everyone adds another rock as they pass by.

One final scenic photo for today, a panorama of the valley we could see to the north of the canyons as we finished our 3.5 hour hiking adventure. The view was seemingly endless!

The day wrapped up with more yummy smoked bbq from the Circle D restaurant in Escalante, then bath and shower time to wash off the desert and canyon dust!
